Protesters blocked the Pan-American Highway with calls against corruption and rising prices of fuel, basic foodstuffs and medicine, as popular anger erupted for a second straight week in Panama.
“Our battle continues, the strike remains indefinite until we have a concrete answer that will satisfy all the Panamanian people”says a protester, Norma Moreno.
“Politicians are the biggest thieves. But in part, it is also the fault of the people who continue to elect such deceitful, vile and lying people. Here’s what they eat; they eat ham for themselves, the people eat garbage”Moreno added further.
Demonstrations organized by the Central American country’s numerous unions have resulted in the closure of several major highways.
President Laurentino Cortizo announced Monday that the price of gasoline for private vehicles will drop to $3.95 per gallon from July 15, a 24 percent drop from the price at the end of June.
He also announced that his government would draft a decree to freeze price increases on a dozen essential food products.
But some unions say the protests will continue until there is an across-the-board price cut and gasoline prices fall below $3 a gallon.
The protests have raised fears in the government and business sectors that the country could see a drop in economic activity or severe consequences for the tourism industry.
