World Meteorological Organization (WMO) official Robert Stefanski has stated that the heat wave affecting Europe may not end until the middle of next week.
“The question everyone is asking, looking ahead, ‘when is this going to end?’ “Unfortunately, looking at all the designs from our partners nationally and regionally, probably not until the middle of next week.” he said at a press conference.
However, the heat is expected to peak on Tuesday for France, the UK and possibly Switzerland.
“We expect this peak to occur right now in Western Europe and move eastward, but still, temperatures will be well above normal.” he said.
Referring to temperature records being broken across Europe, Stefanski said “our concern is that it is happening with shorter periods of time between these records”.
WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas said that these heat waves are becoming more frequent due to climate change.
This situation has brought health problems to the elderly and those with other diseases, making the situation difficult.
