One of the airports with the largest flow of flights in Europe, that of Istanbul, has suspended flights due to a heavy snowstorm that has covered Turkey’s largest city, as well as southeastern Europe.
Schools and offices were closed in Athens as well, as the rare snowstorm has covered the eastern Mediterranean region.
The closure of Istanbul airport, where one of the terminals collapsed due to the weight of snow, has banned flights from the Middle East and Africa to Europe and Asia.
Officials told the AFP network that this is the first closure at the new modern airport that replaced the older Ataturk Airport in 2019.
Meanwhile the first snow created a festive atmosphere in the squares and mosques of Istanbul, where children benefited the most while tourists took pictures.
Flight stops have created problems for the 16 million inhabitants of the country’s largest city, as cars collided with each other on roads and highways.
Shopping malls were closed earlier as food deliveries were suspended, except for “bun” street vendors who stood in the snow.
