Israel will vaccinate Palestinians working in Israel or in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the Office for the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories, which operates under the Israeli Ministry of Defense, said on Sunday.
The vaccination campaign, which would involve about 130,000 Palestinians, is expected to begin within days.
Shaher Saad, general secretary of the Palestinian Workers’ Union, said hundreds of Palestinians working in the service and industrial sectors in Israel have already been privately vaccinated by their employers inside Israel.
He said that under the agreement with Israel, Palestinian medical teams would be deployed at checkpoints to oversee the administration of vaccines.
Israel has vaccinated at least one dose of the Pfizer vaccine over half of the population of 9.3 million, including Palestinians in East Jerusalem.
But Israel has faced criticism from the international community for not doing more to enable the vaccination of Palestinians living in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 during the Middle East war. .
Palestinians have so far received about 32,000 doses of the vaccine for the 5.2 million people living in the West Bank and Gaza.
Israeli officials said that under the Oslo Accords, the Palestinian Ministry of Health is responsible for vaccinating residents in Gaza and parts of the West Bank.
