Israeli military planes struck militant targets in the Gaza Strip on January 1 after several rockets were fired from the Palestinian enclave, sources and the military said.
On January 2, the Israeli military said on Twitter that the rocket attack on militant targets in Hamas-controlled territory was in response to two rockets fired from the Gaza Strip that landed in the Mediterranean Sea near Tel Aviv.
“As fireworks lit up the sky to mark the New Year around the world, another kind of fire came from Gaza – terrorist rockets fired at Israel,” said the Israel Defense Forces.
The Israeli military said it responded by hitting a building for the production of missiles used by Hamas. There are still no reports of casualties.
It is also unclear whether the missiles fired from Gaza were intended to hit any target in Israel.
Aside from an incident in September last year, there have been no rocket attacks since a ceasefire ended the 11-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in March, when Hamas fired rockets at Israel.
The Palestinian militant organization, Hamas, is considered a terrorist group by Israel, the United States and the European Union./REL
