Reacting to the title of “knight” by British Queen Elizabeth II for former Prime Minister Tony Blair, Iraqis believe Blair should be tried for his responsibility in invading Iraq.
As the number of supporters of the petition launched to cancel the title given to Blair in Britain exceeds 1 million, the issue is also on the agenda of the Arab world, writes the Turkish network Anadolu Agency.
Iraqis want Blair, who was criticized for his support of the US-led invasion in 2003, to be tried for war crimes.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), analyst Jawdat Qazim from Baghdad said: “The US and Britain always make decisions that challenge the will of the people. This decision (knight title) is a challenge to the feelings of third world peoples. Tony Blair is a war criminal and should be tried. Blair and George W. Bush were the idiots who invaded Iraq. “As a result of these attacks, the Iraqi people have suffered greatly because of the crises they have experienced.”
Saying that the western world, led by the US and Britain, has made such decisions before, Qazim demanded that the title, which he described as a “big mistake”, be withdrawn as soon as possible.
“The people of Iraq have been condemned to disasters such as famine, misery, lack of public service, and the abolition of the military because of the war in which Blair was a partner. “We hope that the decisions and steps taken by the great powers will be in favor of the law”, said Qazim.
“Blair must stand trial”
Iraqi Kurdish MP Musenna Emin was among those who reacted to former Prime Minister Blair being given the title of “knight”.
“Tony Blair was one of those people who decided to go to war against Iraq. “Although this war was waged to overthrow a dictatorial and ruthless regime, it led to many crimes such as the use of uranium against the people.”
Emin said dozens of children died of starvation during the embargo on Iraq in the 1990s.
“Fighting the people on the pretext of rescuing them from the embargo period and Saddam’s regime is pure murder and this case must be heard in international courts. Tony Blair does not deserve this title as he is a partner in this crime and he should be prosecuted because he said with his mouth that the decision to fight against Iraq was based on lies. “Dozens of innocent people were unjustly targeted in this war.”
Emin stressed that although the plan to save Iraq from Saddam’s regime had good intentions, it should have been carried out without bloodshed, without destroying infrastructure and with less damage, but the opposite happened.
“Blair deceived parliament about weapons of mass destruction”
Blair, who served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1997 to 2007, has been criticized for his support of the 2003 invasion of Iraq by US-led coalition forces.
The Chilcot report, published in 2016, revealed that Blair assured then-US President George W. Bush of support in private negotiations before receiving the approval of the British Parliament.
Blair, who was found to have deceived the British parliament over Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction, made his country a partner in the invasion of Iraq by sending 30,000 troops.
The invasion of Iraq, which began on March 20, 2003, killed an estimated 200,000 Iraqis and 179 British soldiers. / Anadolu /
