Iran said today it has not given up on the cause of revenge for the assassination of General Kassem Soleimani who died in a drone strike in Iraq in 2020, even if Washington offers to lift sanctions.
Revolutionary Guard Commander Alireza Tangsiri said in a statement:
“The enemy continues to send messages that there will be tolerance or the lifting of some sanctions if we give up revenge on Soleiman. But this is just fantasy. “The supreme leader has stressed the need for revenge, which is inevitable and we will choose the time and place for it.”
Soleimani was killed on January 3, 2020 in a drone strike on the orders of then-President Donald Trump. Iran responded by launching rocket attacks on US bases in Iraq and sanctioning officials believed to be responsible for the act.
On the second anniversary of Soleimani’s death, President Ebrahim Raisi said Iran would take revenge, unless those responsible are brought before an international tribunal.
Currently Tehran and Washington have attempted to revive the 2015 nuclear deal, which limits the country’s nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.
Former President Donald Trump walked out of the deal in 2018, with allegations that Iran was violating it, and reinstated harsh sanctions in place.
