France and Germany have supplied weapons to Russia. The two western countries have sold military equipment worth 273 million euros, weapons that can now be used against Ukraine, writes the Telegraph.
They sent equipment, which included bombs, missiles, and weapons, to Moscow, despite a broad EU embargo on arms shipments to Russia, introduced in the wake of the annexation of Crimea in 2014, writes the Telegraph.
The European Commission was forced to close a gap in its blockade this month after it was revealed that at least 10 member states exported almost 350m euros (29 294m) worth of equipment to Vladimir Putin’s regime. About 78 percent of this total was supplied by German and French firms. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has faced sharp criticism this week for his reluctance to offer heavy weapons to Ukraine. Emmanuel Macron’s efforts to negotiate with Putin have also put him at the center of criticism.
Both Paris and Berlin have resisted an EU ban on gas purchases from Russia, with the bloc currently paying Moscow 1 billion euros (40 840 million) a day for energy supplies.
The EU report came after a senior Russian commander said Moscow had expanded its intentions to take “full control” of southern Ukraine as well as the eastern Donbas region.
Russian forces would build a ground bridge to Crimea and could push as far as the Moldovan border, said Major General Rustam Minnekayev, deputy commander of Russia’s central military district.
