The March 16 bombing of a Mariupol theater was one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the war in Ukraine.
A recent investigation has revealed that the death toll could be much higher than previously thought.
Ukrainian authorities said about 300 people were killed in the airstrike, which left the building in ruins and left people trapped in the bomb shelter below. While the Associated Press investigation, now suggests that about 600 people died in the attack.
Interviews with 23 survivors, rescuers, photos and videos taken inside before, during and after that day, were used for the investigation.
Oksana Syomina was in the basement with her husband at the time of the attack and said they had to cross over the bodies as they fled.
“All the people are still under the rubble, no one has moved them“, She said crying. “This is a large mass grave.”
Witnesses said there was about one person for every three square feet of space in rooms and hallways. They said over 100 people were around the kitchen at the time of the attack and that all died.
Most witnesses said about 1,000 people were in the building at the time and no one, including rescuers, saw more than 200 people being rescued alive.
