The Special Prosecution against Corruption and Organized Crime has closed the investigations for the 28 persons arrested and prosecuted within the operation codenamed “Spirit”.
All of these individuals were prosecuted and arrested as part of a several-year Italian-Albanian anti-drug investigation, the results of which were communicated by the SPAK at the time at a joint press conference with Italian prosecution authorities on 2 July.
For this case, the defendants were also taken as defendants Vlora Prosecutor Maksim Sota, whom SPAK took as defendants for abuse of office former anti-trafficking chief Ilirjan Balla and two former bodyguards of Saimir Tahiri, Agustin Deda and Hekuran Marku, one arrested in France and the other in Germany. For the latter two aggravated the charge of drug trafficking.
This international anti-drug operation, carried out simultaneously in 4 countries, was finalized in July with 28 detainees, including a prosecutor, a director and three senior Albanian Police officers. The arrests were made in Albania, Italy, Montenegro and Spain. Investigations for this operation were conducted from May 2019 to January 2021, which made it possible to collect important data on 38 Albanian citizens. 38 were arrest warrants issued by SPAK, 10 executed in 2020, while the other 28 were executed a few days ago.
