In the early 1990s, the head of the most dangerous drug cartel, Pablo Escobar, agreed to spend five years in his private luxury prison, with designated ‘jacuzzi’ spaces, football fields, helicopter landing pads and even his own army. private.
During the 1980s, Escobar’s private assassins had waged war on the Colombian government while after his arrest his lawyers fought the extradition order to the US.
But when ‘El Patron’ finally decided in 1991 to surrender on his terms, personal imprisonment was just as extravagant as one might expect from someone with bloody transactions earning at least $ 1 million a day.
According to the “surrender” agreement, Escobar was to spend five years in the prison he built, which he called the ‘Cathedral’.
In it Escobar chose the guards who defended the plant or those who could be imprisoned with it, and even Colombian government officials had to stay at least 5 km away from the complex.
The drug lord had climbed a hill in Medellin and in June 1991 he settled there along with his private army.
The location provided a strategic view of the area to be defended by rival armies.
The serial killer even chose the position for his house to be seen from that of his daughter in Medellin through a telescope.
So Pablo’s time in prison was not to complain as the drug lord added luxury works to the premises by adding extravagant bars, sports fields and artificial waterfalls.
Often his gang secretly introduced prostitutes and expensive food to the resort as extravagant parties were organized in honor of the guests.
The Colombian government turned a blind eye to the adventures of Escobar’s fictitious imprisonment but their patience was put to the test when four of his accomplices were killed inside the compound.
In July 1992, the Colombian army surrounded the compound and ordered Escobar’s surrender which further led to his transportation to a normal prison.
So Pablo quietly walked out the door unchallenged by the authorities, who were all terrified of his reputation.
But a year later, Pablo’s infamous life ended after being shot in the head by a sniper in Medellin in December 1993.
His personal prison was given to the management of the monks who transformed it into a place of prayer, where they try to remove the old traces of the emperor’s drug activity.
