In Albania, the cost of afforestation per hectare is 5 times higher than in EU countries, as it costs a lot to open the pit where the seedlings will be planted.
This seems paradoxical if we consider the fact that in Albania, labor is cheaper than in the EU area.
“We still spend a lot of time to open holes planted with seedlings that are 10 cm… It is not the cost of seedlings that costs but it is the cost of opening the pits that goes up to 70% of the total” Genti Kromidha, Institute for Nature Conservation
Another reason for this high cost is the fact that in our country there is no state nursery and every seedling is bought in private.
“One of the reasons why Albania has a high cost of afforestation is precisely the private nurseries. If in Switzerland or Italy the cost to afforest 1 hectare is 200 thousand euros in Albania it is 2.5 times higher because the first is manual labor and the second is the high price of seedlings “said Abdulla Diku, Environmental Expert
