Agriculture in Albania is going through a deep crisis for years. For the fifth year in a row, a significant portion of greenhouses are facing colossal losses.
Rising prices of inputs, fertilizers, seeds and the lack of incentive policies, have led to the planting of 20% less greenhouses this year. So farmers have not been able to buy seedlings either and greenhouses are being abandoned. The investment is going to waste.
As is the case in the village of Gorican, Kutalli administrative unit of Berat municipality. After working for 5 years in a row, the members of this family who invested in this area all the effort of two decades of emigration, finally abandoned it a year ago, taking with them a mountain of debts. Most debts are near the points that sell fertilizers and near the nurseries.
The abandoned greenhouse has an area of 2.5 acres, while next to it is abandoned another greenhouse of 4 acres. A little further on another greenhouse has been abandoned.
“They came with remittances with tens of thousands of euros saved in emigration, they came equipped with knowledge and technology after working in greenhouses in Sicily or Greece, they came and got loans with very high interest rates, 15-20-25%, they worked 4-5 years and today they were forced to abandon it and return to emigration again, but at a much higher cost as they have to start all over again, but also with debts “said Eduart Sharka, Head of the Farmers’ Union
The family that left the greenhouse at home did not make a profit. In Italy, on the other hand, they can earn a good living by working in agriculture.
“After failing for two seasons, he remained in debt at the points of input and returned to Italy in emigration. Currently they work there again in agriculture with 50 euros a day, but they pay the rents and debts created in Albania, while here they were on their land “said Eduart Sharka, Head of the Farmers’ Union
“INSIDE STORY” was able to identify dozens of greenhouses abandoned during the field monitoring. This seems to be a consequence of high costs.
“We have stated, based on data from nurseries, that 20% of greenhouses have not been cultivated. Here, if you measure, you exceed that percentage, in this block that 40% of the greenhouses are not cultivated “said Eduart Sharka, Head of the Farmers’ Union
