The “golden apple” for pirates are important live events, mainly sports, for which serious companies spend millions of euros on the right of transmission and distribution.
Given that this is where the biggest abuse lies, we focused on our investigation to see concretely how sports broadcasts of even global interest are stolen.
We set up a network of collaborators in the districts and monitored in real time
the broadcast of the Europa League final match on 18 May between Eintracht Frankfurt and the Rangers. For this event, the exclusive right of broadcasting within the territory of the Republic of Albania belonged to the company Dixhitalb.
From this monitoring it results that a large part of cable operators, regardless of the fact whether or not they have a contract with Digitalb, have “stolen” this event by broadcasting it without authorization.
More specifically, the subject “APT” in Saranda, although it has a contract with Digitalb for a bouquet of channels, does not have a contract for broadcasting sports events. However, this Cable TV broadcasted it through the Greek channel ERT1.
The subject finds as justification the fact that it broadcast the event through the Greek channel, and not Supersort. But, when the law defines the broadcasting exclusivity for Digitalb within Albania, it clearly states that cables should not broadcast the same event through foreign channels. So, this is an open violation that aggravates Digitalb in this case, just as other legal companies can be penalized for other events. When we made these legal provisions known, the company administrator found a strange excuse, on the verge of ridiculous.
