The Indian Army has admitted to accidentally launching a missile towards Pakistan.
The New Delhi Defense Ministry said it felt “deep regret” for the incident and blamed a “technical breakdown” for which a high-level investigation is under way.
The official apology came after Pakistan’s armed forces accused India of endangering people’s lives by “unprovoked airspace violation”.
A warning was issued for India stating that “care must be taken of the consequences of such negligence and measures must be taken to avoid future violations”.
The two neighboring countries are nuclear powers and have fought three times against each other in border conflicts.
The “flying at high altitude” object crashed in the eastern Pakistani city of Mian Channu after being launched from the northern Indian city of Sirsa, in Haryana.
The rocket was flying at an altitude of 12,000 meters, at three times the speed of sound, traveling about 100 km inside Pakistan’s airspace.
Following the dramatic development, Pakistan’s foreign ministry summoned the envoy to work in Islamabad to protest the incident.
Pakistani military spokesman General Babar Iftikhar told a news conference: “The facility’s flight path endangered the flights of national and international aircraft in the airspace of India and Pakistan as well as property and human life on earth.”
A statement from the Indian Ministry of Defense said: “On March 9, 2022, during routine maintenance work, a technical malfunction led to the accidental launch of a missile.”
“It is learned that the rocket landed in an area of Pakistan.
“The incident is a very unfortunate event and we felt relief that there was no damage or loss of life.”
