NASA’s Perserverance spacecraft will begin searching for signs of earlier life on Mars, but the latest discovery seems to support the idea of current life on the red planet as well.
Arizona State University scientists analyzed images from the surface of Mars taken by the orbiter, Reconnaissance. In them, the study authors, Aditya Khuller and Philip Christensen, observed evidence of the presence of ice particles in areas where water has eroded the soil.
This is significant, according to Khuller, as the ice on Mars melts when it is in lower and warmer places, which means there may be liquid water inside the ice sheet, and liquid water is the best place to create life.
“If we were to look for signs of life on Mars, we would have to start right here,” the study’s authors explain. “We knew in time that there was ice on Mars,” Kuller added, “but this is the first time we’ve seen it in areas near the equator, where it could melt.”
The team hopes his findings could lead NASA and other agencies where to focus when looking for signs of life on the Red Planet in future missions.
