The head of the Russian Orthodox Church, who has been sanctioned for his support of Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine, has been ousted during a religious service.
The video, which initially circulated on Twitter, shows how Patriarch Kirill was consecrating a church in the town of Novorossiysk near the Black Sea when he slipped on the marble floor.
Newsweek writes that the Patriarch tried to laugh after the fall, while calling himself the victim of a slippery surface.
“The fact that I fell today does not mean anything. Only the floor is wonderful, you can see yourself in it, it is so bright and smooth. “When water is poured on it, even if it is sacred, then the laws of physics come into play.” he said before the believers.
The head of the Russian Orthodox Church has faced sanctions in recent months over his country’s support for the ongoing war in Ukraine.
His stance has caused a split in the Orthodox faith worldwide, with his leadership. Despite this stance, he was condemned by the US-based Orthodox Committee on Public Affairs, describing his support for the war as “cruel and unjustified”.
