“Savings in Albanian banks have reached record levels. Bank of Albania data show that at the end of 2021 bank deposits expanded to ALL 1.22 trillion, almost EUR 10 billion. In relation to 2020, bank deposits increased by about 860 million euros. “
This increase of savings by over 104 billion in the span of a year results according to the highest statistics in the last decade, since 2010 when they expanded by about 1 billion euros, or 122 billion.
The strongest tendency to increase savings is observed especially after the pandemic, during the years 2020-2021, which seems to have changed the behavior of citizens to spend and save as a result of growing uncertainties.
Compared to 2019 when the total bank deposits of businesses, citizens and institutions reached 8.5 billion euros, their savings have increased by about 1.5 billion euros by the end of last December.
Foreign currency savings, which have marked a significant increase, dominated bank deposits last year, reaching the value of ALL 663 billion.
On the other hand, deposits in local currency also expanded, reaching ALL 553.1 billion, although the growth was more moderate than those in foreign currency.
This growing trend of putting money in banks seems to be attributed to the economic situation in the country, where businesses in certain sectors affected by the pandemic seem to be stepping up investments or postponing them in time, preferring to keep their savings in the banking system.
