In 2021, about 15,000 new enterprises were registered in the country, INSTAT reported, in the new publication on business registers.
There are 118,627 economically active enterprises in the country (excluding farmers) by the end of 2021.
Meanwhile, there are also 62,922 farmers equipped with NIPT Taxable Person Identification Number; In total, the number of active legal units at the end of 2021 is 181,549.
Active enterprises (excluding farmers)
118,627 is the number of enterprises at the end of 2021 marking an increase of 1.1% compared to 2020;
14,946 enterprises were registered during 2021, out of 12,376 registered during 2020;
86.6% of enterprises are service producers, from 86.4% in 2020 respectively;
In the municipality of Tirana are concentrated most of the enterprises, while in the municipality of Pustec the lowest number is recorded;
Large enterprises with 50 or more employees occupy only 1.7% of the total enterprises. Their contribution to employment is estimated at 51.1% in 2021, from 51.9% in 2020;
5.6% of enterprises are foreign and joint ventures, of which 40.3% are from Italy and 5.1% from Greece;
Economic structure of enterprises (excluding farmers)
In the group “Producers of goods”, the industry sector has the greatest impact on the country’s economy. The contribution of the industry is evident in:
the number of total active enterprises by 7.6%;
the number of total employees by 18.8%;
the number of salaried employees by 20.9%;
annual turnover realized by 22.3%.
86.6% of active enterprises operate in the group “Service Producers”, realizing 65.3% of the annual turnover. In this group of enterprises, the main role is played by trade (mainly wholesale, retail and vehicle repair). Total employees in trade account for 18.7% of the total number of employees.
The Albanian economy, according to INSTAT is mainly focused on trade and other services. Enterprises with commercial activity count 29.9% of the total enterprises registered during 2021. Commercial activity realizes the largest annual turnover in the economy, with 39.6%
About 85.6% of enterprises are small enterprises with 1-4 employees and their contribution is estimated at 21.7% in employment and 17.8% in the realization of the annual turnover.
Enterprises with 50 or more employees represent 1.7% of the total enterprises, employ 51.1% of the total employees, and realize 46.5% of the total annual turnover.
In the regions of Tirana, Durrës and Fier are concentrated about 64.1% of enterprises. The largest number of enterprises is recorded in the region of Tirana with 54,641 enterprises, while the smallest number in the region of Kukes with 1,261 enterprises. The situation is the same during 2020.
The dominance of the group of service providers is a phenomenon in all counties. 56.7% of the group of service producers are concentrated in Tirana and Durrës counties.
Registered farmers
The number of farmers equipped with NIPT at the end of 2021 is 62,922 marking an increase of 28.3% compared to farmers at the end of 2020;
Farmers registered in the municipality of Lushnje occupy 11.0% of active farmers equipped with NIPT;
27.2% of farmers engage in economic activity on mixed farms;
10.8% of farmers owners or managers are women. 31.1% of enterprises are run by women, from 31.4% at the end of 2020;
At the end of 2021, 128,263 local units are registered, of which 116,916 exercise economic activity in one location.
The annual turnover realized by enterprises for 2021 is 3.428 billion ALL.
The total number of employees in active enterprises at the end of 2021 is 700,763, of which 320,371 are female employees.
