Armed conflict has broken out in eastern Ukraine between the Ukrainian army and Moscow-backed separatists.
The clashes took place in the Donbas region, where the Ukrainian army reported that Russian-backed forces attacked a village in the Luhansk region, also hitting a kindergarten. Rosemary DiCarlo, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, also reacted to the clash, condemning the violation of the ceasefire in the Donbas area.
“If verified, these violations should not be allowed to escalate further. “We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint at this time,” DiCarlo said. And while the situation in Ukraine continues to be threatening, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Russia has amassed more than 150,000 troops around Ukraine’s borders. For Blinken, diplomacy is the only way to resolve the crisis.
“Russia plans to produce a pretext for its attack. It could be a so-called terrorist bomb invented inside Russia. The invented discovery of a mass grave, a drone strike against civilians, or a fake – even real – attack using chemical weapons.
Russia can describe this event as ethnic cleansing, or a genocide that mocks a concept that we in this room do not take lightly. “I am here today not to start a war, but to prevent it,” Blinken said.
Blinken revealed that he had sent a letter to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov proposing that they meet next week in Europe. He is also proposing meetings of the NATO-Russia Council and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe.
