Mitch Hunter was 21 years old when he collided with an electric pole and felt 10,000 volts of current passing through his body, leaving him tragically disfigured.
The former US military man saw his life completely changed after the terrible accident, but he is already one of the five people in the world who have received a complete face transplant, so he says that he “holds someone else’s face”.
Mitch is now 42 years old but remembers how he felt the 10,000 volt electric shock to his body in the 2001 accident.
He says that in the accident he had saved his friend in the car by pushing her out of the way of the current, remaining disfigured and losing three fingers in her right hand.
Mitch had needed a lot of leather donations on his legs and back.
But already the father of three in Indiana, he says he did not want the children to have a father with a changed face.
About 30 doctors spent at least 14 hours rebuilding Mitch’s face, replacing her nose, lips and tying her facial muscles and nerves.
But without being intimidated by his story, Mitch is already a vocal character on the TikTok network where he speaks out against the stigmatization of facial transplants.
In a recent conversation, he told followers: “This is someone else’s face. It is also the donor’s beard, as the facial hairs come with his skin.
He says that before the transplant people looked at him with horror and it was not fun at all. “Now it is easier to live a more normal life,” he says.
“It has changed me a lot, but it is easier to go out in public and do the normal things that people do normally.”
