Hungary is looking to reduce dependence on Russian gas, and one of its largest cities is investing in geothermal energy.
Szeged is the third largest city in Hungary with about 200,000 inhabitants, where the heating of apartments depends entirely on gas imported from Russia.
In recent years Szeged has launched a new project to use geothermal energy.
“Behind me is the well of the geothermal system of the Tarján neighborhood. To make geothermal energy renewable we really need to drill near the producing well and two other wells as well. The wells are about 2000 meters. And we produce thermal water from the depth of 1500 m and 1900 m from the geological layer located there”.
Although Hungary is rich in geothermal energy, it has been untapped until now.
Replacing gas with geothermal energy will reduce the city’s greenhouse gas emissions by 60 percent, engineers say.
