Hungary hopes to reach an agreement with European Union authorities by the end of the year, in order to have access to billions of dollars of pandemic recovery fund.
The European Commission has frozen the access of Hungary and Poland to some EU funds due to the two countries’ attitudes towards migration, discrimination against women and members of the LGBT community and restrictions on the media and the rule of law.
The Hungarian Minister for EU Affairs, Tibor Navracsics, told the Hungarian state news agency, MTU, that Budapest would do everything it could to sign the plan for Hungary’s recovery “in the second half of the year, by the end of year ”.
He added that the process leading up to the signing of the agreement is “complicated”, expressing less optimism than the statements he made on Tuesday in Hungary, through which it was hinted that the negotiations were in the final stage.
Hungary had originally requested 7.2 billion euros in grants from the EU fund for the coronavirus pandemic recovery, but after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban signaled that he planned to take out low-interest loans through the program.
On June 1, the European Commission approved billions of dollars in recovery funds for Poland.
