The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, said that his country could not support the new package of European Union sanctions against Russia, in the form they have been presented, including the embargo on imports of Russian crude oil.
In an interview with Hungarian state radio, Orban said the European Commission proposal would constitute a “nuclear bomb” fired at the Hungarian economy, adding that Hungary was ready to negotiate if it saw a new proposal, which would suited the interests of Budapest.
On May 4, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unveiled a new package of sanctions against Russia over its occupation of Ukraine.
The proposal includes giving up supplies of Russian crude oil within six months, while refining products by the end of the year.
This sixth package of sanctions of the European bloc, in order to enter into force, requires the unanimous approval of the 27 EU states./REL
