Hundreds of US elite troops are expected to arrive in southeastern Poland on Sunday, near the border with Ukraine, following a decision by President Joe Biden to deploy 1,700 troops there amid fears of a Russian-led invasion of Ukraine.
Troops from the 82nd Infantry Division, specializing in air strikes, are expected to arrive at Rzeszow-Jasionka Airport. Their commander is Major General Christopher Donahue, who was the last U.S. soldier to leave Afghanistan on August 30th.
President Biden has ordered additional US troops to be deployed in Poland, Romania and Germany to show US allies and adversaries Washington’s commitment to NATO’s eastern flank amid rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
The division can deploy rapidly within 18 hours and carry out parachute attacks to take control of key targets. The North Carolina-based Fort Bragg Division dates back to 1917.
Earlier in the week, US aircraft brought in logistics equipment in preparation for the arrival of the division at the airport, which is located about 90 kilometers from the Poland-Ukraine border.
Polish soldiers have previously worked with the US Division on missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Major Przemyslaw Lipczynski, spokesman for the 18th Division of the Polish Army.
About 4,000 US troops have been stationed in Poland since 2017, following a rotation cycle./VOA
