A group of nearly 300 girls who were abducted last week from a school in northwestern Nigeria have been released, local officials said on Tuesday.
The girls were abducted by gunmen from a school in Jangebe, Zamfara state, and taken to the forest, police said.
The state governor said the group has been released and the girls are safe.
“I am delighted to announce the release of students abducted from captivity,” Governor Bello Matawalle wrote on Twitter.
Authorities said 279 girls had been released and added that the figure given last week by police for 317 abducted girls was not accurate.
An official told the Reuters news agency that the discrepancy in the figures occurred because some girls fled immediately after being abducted.
The group’s release was secured through negotiations between government officials and the kidnappers, Zamfara state authorities said.
Such kidnappings are carried out for ransom and often occur in Nigeria.
