54 dead and dozens injured is the tragic balance of a serious road accident in Mexico, where a truck crashed and rolled without giving the victims any chance of escape.
Over 150 people, immigrants from Central America, were in the truck trailer when the unfortunate episode occurred in Chiapas state.
This is one of the most horrific accidents of its kind ever recorded in the country.
Forty-nine people died at the scene, while five others died at the hospital, said Chiapas Governor Rutilio Escandón.
Nearly 105 people were injured – 83 men and 22 women. The nationality of the victims has not yet been confirmed, but local officials said most of the people traveling in the truck were from Honduras and Guatemala.
Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described the accident as “very painful” and added that “I am very sorry for the tragedy”.
The truck was reportedly traveling at high speed when the driver made a sharp turn, hitting a pedestrian bridge in Tuxla Guiterrez in Chiapas state.
Hundreds of thousands of immigrants fleeing poverty and violence in Central America each year attempt to cross into Mexico in order to reach the United States.
Most pay smugglers, who no longer even transport them in trucks full of people.
