Hong Kong for several weeks is facing the worst wave of Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. Hospitals have been put in great difficulty, due to the high number of patients, a large part of whom have been placed in the corridors and in many cases without receiving proper care.
The high number of cases with the Omicron variant, highlighted the government’s preparation to deal with the created urgency, after two years where the pandemic was kept under control thanks to the so-called “zero Covid” policy, with immediate blockade and isolation, massive tests aimed at stopping coronavirus outbreaks.
Last week in Hong Kong, an average of 285 people died daily from Covid-19, marking one of the highest rates in the world. In Italy, the number of cases that have lost their lives has gone up to 140 per day in the last week, also as a result of the increase in positive cases since the end of February.
On average last week the positive cases detected in Hong Kong every day were 2,300. Since the start of the new wave, which started slowly in late December, 740,000 cases have been detected in Hong Kong, but according to the analysis, the figure greatly underestimates the extent of the infection.
Doctors and the rest of the health staff attribute the health crisis to the considerable lack of preparation of the local government, which had not drawn up specific plans for an increase in new Covid cases, but had focused on the “zero Covid” policy.
Such a policy succeeded in these two years of pandemics, with rare outbreaks that health authorities had managed to keep under control, albeit by imposing strict isolation rules on entire neighborhoods for weeks or months depending on of the number of cases.
To stop the infections immediately, starting in the first months of 2020, Hong Kong had predicted that anyone infected with Covid would be admitted to a health facility, even if they had no symptoms. People who came in contact with the infected person had to be quarantined for a maximum of three weeks. Some of the rules changed over time, even after the introduction of systems for conducting mass tests in entire neighborhoods.
However, the arrival of the Omicron variant at the end of last year has changed things significantly.
