A court in China’s eastern Jiangsu province has ruled in favor of a publicist who called homosexuality a “psychological disorder” in a university textbook.
According to copies of the Feb. 9 ruling, the Suyu regional court in Suqian said the description came as a result of ‘perception differences’ but was not in fact a mistake in the human body.
“I feel demoralized because they did not even make a real trial to decide,” said the activist who filed the lawsuit, which uses only the nickname XiXi.
In 2017, XiXi sued Jinan University Press and the JD.com publishing network for distributing false information in a 2013 book on mental health education for university students.
“The pedagogical material classifies homosexuality as a psychological disorder, which in fact it is not,” said the 24-year-old NGO worker, adding that she found out about the court decision only at the end of last month.
“I am very disappointed because we are seeing comments that support this judgment.”
“This is very damaging to the whole LGBT community so we are very disappointed,” added Peng Yanzi, director of the LGBT advocacy group in China.
