The Oscar-winning American actor posted an image of himself with luggage and a backpack next to a string of cars as he sought to cross into neighboring Ukraine.
Penn, 61, said he and two colleagues had walked several miles to the Polish border where they abandoned their cars on the side of the road, without giving a reason why they had done so.
He further added that the cars in sight carried only women and children, most of them without luggage, adding that the car was “their only possession”.
According to an agency report Reuters Penn had managed to cross into Poland in good health.
Last Thursday the actor was photographed at a government press conference in Kiev, the day Russia launched its offensive to invade Ukraine.
At the time, the Ukrainian president’s office wrote in a comment: “Today Sean Penn is in Ukraine to defend Ukraine.”
According to the post, Penn has been in Ukraine since November to make a documentary and has met with several government and military officials.
Earlier, calling Ukraine “the tip of the arrow for democratic dreams”, he praised the Ukrainian people for “courage and principles”.
This is not the first time Penn has visited the conflict zone.
He has been in Haiti since the devastating 2010 earthquake and assisted rescue efforts after the 2005 hurricane that devastated New Orleans.
