The number of positive cases according to tests for Covid-19 in private laboratory clinics in the country is significantly increasing.
In private clinics the flow of tests in the first week of January is 3 times higher than in December. In the State Health Centers 40% of daily cases with symptoms of cough, headache and fever are affected by Covid-19, while the rest by seasonal flu.
Doctors claim that the reason for the increase in positive cases is the lifting of movement restrictions for the end-of-year holidays, the arrival of immigrants, the presence of the Omicron variant that has a higher spread rate than Delta, and the decline in vaccine protection.
Anesthesiologist, Vasil Llajo, administrator of medical laboratory networks “Intermedica” told Monitor that this first week of the year the influx of patients seeking to perform the test for Covid-19 has tripled, compared to December 2021. Llajo adds that also 3 times higher than December 2021 are the positive cases of this week, mainly in unvaccinated persons.
“It is predicted that the influx of patients in laboratory clinics will be high by the end of January. The beginning of February is expected to see a decline in positive cases. The high increase of positive cases with Covid-19 is due to the effect of the end-of-year holidays, where people were more freely on the move. “Another reason for the increase in cases is the appearance of the Omicron variant, which turns out to have 70% faster spread than the Delta variant”, affirms doctor Vasil Llajo, adding that only specific laboratory tests can determine the variant of infection in sick patients.
From the network of laboratories “Intermedica” (in Tirana there are 13 points) for January 2021 were performed 10,178 tampons and 6% were positive. In February, 12,654 were performed and 11.8% were positive. For the period August-December, out of the total number of tests performed, 9% of them were positive with Covid-19.
According to data reported by the Ministry of Health on January 5, the positive cases reached 1,236 or 35% higher than the day before.
In Albania, the health protocol stipulates that any individual who shows symptoms of Covid-19, first contacts the family doctor, presenting himself at the health center, or a family member. Depending on the signs, rapid testing is generally recommended if it is in the first three or four days of symptoms.
The family doctor of the Health Center-Kamza, Elizabeta Musta says that since December 27, they are presenting over 200 patients a day with symptoms such as cough, fever and headache. “Most patients with these symptoms are sick with seasonal flu, while 40% of them come out with Covid-19 after testing. Among them are also positive confirmed persons tested positive 1 year ago and vaccinated 6 months ago with 2 doses. “The reasons for the increase in Covid-19 cases are the holidays, the arrivals from abroad, the presence of Omicron, but also as a reason for the reduction of vaccine protection.”
Doctor Elisabeta Musta, among other things, claims that difficulties are being encountered even with the quick tests that many times come out false negative. “It should be noted that even when the test is negative, the touch on the lungs is an infiltration of inflammatory origin, ie pneumonia from Covid-19.”
In these 2 weeks of increasing positive cases, in Kamza Health Center, the family doctor confirmed that there was no increase in cases for hospitalization, except for 2 or 3 cases with concomitant diseases.
Meanwhile, Albania continues to have the lowest number of two-dose vaccinations. From the start of the vaccination campaign in February 2021 until January 4, 2022, according to the data of Our World in Data in Albania, it turns out that 37% of the population has received both doses of the vaccine. In Northern Macedonia, vaccinated people make up 39%, in Kosovo and Montenegro 40%, in Serbia 47% of the population, Croatia 53% and Greece 65%. For EU countries, the average two-dose vaccine is 63% of the population. / Monitor /
