Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized for the comments of his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, who claimed that Adolf Hitler was of Jewish origin.
The news was confirmed by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who said he accepted the apology and thanked Putin for clarifying his position.
In an interview with Italian TV earlier this week, Lavrov was asked to address how Russia might say it should “denazify” the country when its president, Zelenskiy, is Jewish.
Lavrov replied:
“As for the argument of [Zelenskiy] what kind of Nazism could there be when he is Jewish, if I remember correctly and I may be wrong, Hitler also had Jewish blood. “It means nothing at all.”
The remarks sparked a diplomatic row with Israel, one of the few Western countries that has not yet imposed sanctions on Russia for its occupation and has not offered military assistance to Ukraine.
