Two potential new members of the NATO alliance have submitted their applications for membership today. Their offers, which come in the light of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, have already faced resistance from Turkey.
Finland and Sweden submitted their bid to join NATO this Wednesday, despite Turkey’s threat to block the rise of the Nordic countries.
In a Twitter post, the alliance calls the submission of application letters to Brussels a historic day.

Accession protocols for both countries can be signed as early as June, to be followed by ratification procedures in the member states. Finland and Sweden can become members of NATO within a year. The process usually takes up to a year.
Finland, which shares a 1,300-kilometer (800-mile) border with Russia, and Sweden are concerned about Ukraine’s invasion of Ukraine.
Despite being neutral states, both Finland and Sweden have made rapid moves to join the military alliance.
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday warned that NATO enlargement could trigger a response.
