The US Ambassador to Serbia, Christopher Hill, stated on June 13 that Serbia needs to think about where its future lies and whether “this neutral position” of official Belgrade is stable.
He said that in this way, Serbia should make its decision.
Hill told reporters in Belgrade that what happened in Ukraine “is a brutal attack on that country and the continued killing of civilians is completely unacceptable in this century.”
He added that such a development has not been seen since the end of World War II.
“We are all aware that the world has changed since February and that we all need to rethink where we are, what our position is and where we want to be in the future.” he said.
Asked what the priority should be (for Serbia) at the moment is the imposition of sanctions against Russia or the normalization of relations with Kosovo, Hill replied that these are issues for the Serbian authorities.
“I think this is the question you should ask the representatives of your government, I represent the US government here and I am not here to give advice, so you should find the answers to these questions with the Serbian authorities. Said Hill.
Serbia has condemned the Russian occupation of Ukraine at the United Nations, while in the UN Committee on Human Rights voted for the exclusion of Russia from this international body.
However, Serbian officials have repeatedly mentioned that Serbia will not impose sanctions on Russia, due to friendly ties with that country, as well as due to its energy dependence on Russia and the Kremlin’s stance not to recognize Kosovo’s independence.
European Union countries, as well as the US, have repeatedly urged official Belgrade to harmonize its foreign policy with that of the West. Serbia is a candidate country for EU membership./ REL
