Foreign trade continued to grow in June. Compared to a year ago, exports reached the value of 46 billion ALL, increasing by 32.2%, while imports reached the value of 81 billion ALL, increasing by 20.8%.
The most exported goods in June were construction materials and metals, chemical and plastic products and textiles in third place.
Meanwhile, the goods that have been purchased are led by fuels, electricity, food and machinery.
For experts, the figures are inflated by the general increase in prices
“The values of imports and exports seem much wider, the problem is that these are increases in values and not increases in volumes. If we look at the import-export difference, the increase in prices has widened the gap, which is bad news for the Albanian economy as the deficit grows even more. So the money citizens have to take out of their pockets for the same goods and services increases, while the money they receive from exports is smaller compared to imports,” said Mateo Spaho.
In June, according to the figures, the expansion of foreign trade decreased compared to the first months of the year. For experts, this is a clear sign that consumption in the country is falling.
“The general increase in prices brings less money into citizens’ pockets since salaries have not increased and as a result there is less money available either for vacations or clothing and this thing in a second moment as it is happening will give the effects in a slower import and export. Also, our currency is linked to the euro, as the dollar has strengthened against both, and in these conditions international trade will be less favorable,” said Mateo Spaho.
During the six-month period, Albania exported 73% of goods to the EU, while it imported 52% from the continent. The main trade partners are: Italy, Turkey, Greece, and Germany, while the country has cut off its energy dependence from Russia and stopped the import of grain from Ukraine.
