The court of Durrës has released the money changer arrested by the police for hiding income.
The 60-year-old cashier from Durrës was arrested by the police as part of a police operation against informality codenamed “Currency”, an operation that was based on several weeks of investigation.
A considerable amount of foreign currency was also seized from him at his apartment. The arrest of the money changer Hyqmet A. was made after, according to the police, he had committed the criminal offenses “concealment of income” and “non-payment of taxes”.
Meanwhile, the accusation raised by the prosecution in the court session, for the validation and imposition of the security measure against him, is that of “exercising financial activities without a license”. The prosecution requested an “obligation to appear” for the accused money changer under Article 170 / ç / 1 of the Criminal Code which provides for a fine or imprisonment of up to 3 years in case he pleads guilty. He, meanwhile, demanded that the court immediately begin hearing the case against him.
The same money changer was arrested in 2017 for illegally exercising foreign exchange activity. In the city of Durrës, in the area near the bust of Azem Hajdari, known as the former garden “1 Maji” for many years is exercised by a group of money changers, the activity of exchanging different currencies.
