Apocalyptic scenes were filmed last night on the outskirts of Athens as wildfires engulfed the Schisto Korydallou area around 22.00.
Footage collected by local photographers showed the flames approaching just a few meters from the houses.
The incident could be seen from different areas of Athens as videos on social media showed smoke rising in the dark sky.
At least 54 firefighters and 13 vehicles were reportedly battling the blaze, which was brought under control around 4am, according to Greek authorities.
The images also showed local volunteers intervening to prevent the flames from spreading to homes and infrastructure.
Temperatures in Athens were around 37 degrees Celsius yesterday but the flames were helped by the winds blowing in the area.
Fires were also reported in the Attica area, 18 km from the capital, in the early hours of the morning.
Another fire was brought under control in the Kerry region, on the island of Crete, where army ground forces were mobilized.
The Ministry of Civil Defense warned of the constant danger of fires from high temperatures in areas such as Attica, Euboea, Argolis, Boeotia and Corinth.
Last year thousands of people were forced to evacuate to various areas of Greece by devastating fires.
