Thousands of firefighters are still battling blazes in Portugal, Spain and France as the heat wave shows no signs of easing.
In northern Portugal, a pilot died when the plane he was transporting water in crashed in the Foz Coa area, near the Spanish border. Portuguese authorities say at least 238 people have died from the heat over the past week.
Fires are ravaging areas of southwestern France’s Gironde region, where more than 12,000 people have been evacuated.
Heat waves have become more frequent, more intense and last longer due to human-caused climate change. The world has already warmed by around 1.1C since the start of the industrial age, and temperatures will continue to rise unless governments around the world make big cuts in carbon emissions.
The French weather service has predicted temperatures of up to 41 degrees in parts of the south of the country on Sunday and new heat records are forecast for Monday.
Meanwhile, in Great Britain, the country is preparing for record temperatures. Authorities have warned passengers in the capital to avoid all but essential travel these days. The government held an emergency Cobra meeting on Saturday to review the handling of the heat wave
