High temperatures hit much of Western Europe today as a savage heatwave heads north.
The UK hit its highest ever temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius, according to figures measured by the Met Office, and forecasters warned that temperatures were still rising.
Extreme heat warnings have also been issued in France and record July temperatures were reported in the Netherlands.
Deadly fires in France, Portugal, Spain and Greece have forced thousands of people from their homes.
Two people have died in wildfires in Spain’s northwestern Zamora region, and train services in the area have been halted due to a fire near the tracks. An elderly couple lost their lives while trying to escape the fires in the north of Portugal.
Heat waves have become more frequent, more intense and last longer due to human-caused climate change. Fires are still raging a day after several French cities, including Nantes in the west, saw their hottest day on record.
More than 30,000 people have been evacuated, with several camp sites destroyed and emergency shelters set up.n
