Los Angeles police have released video of the incident that shocked the United States after one of its officers mistakenly shot and killed a 14-year-old girl while trying to target someone else.
Footage taken by the effective body camera shows the chaotic moment when law enforcement officers enter the store after reports that a person, later identified as Daniel Elena-Lopez, 24, had attacked several female customers. Police saw one of them on the ground covered in blood and shot the 24-year-old, but one of the bullets pierced the walls of the rehearsal room where Valentina Orellana-Peralta was.
Between tears, the teenager’s mother confessed that the girl had given up the ghost in her arms. “When we heard the screams, we sat down on the ground, hugged and started praying,” Soledad Peralta said.
She said the daughter was looking for a dress for the holiday season. Valentina and her family had only moved to the US from Chile 6 months ago, but despite the fact that her stay was quite short, the 14-year-old had excelled in high school. According to her father, she considered the United States “the safest country in the world.”
