“Russian President Vladimir Putin made a mistake when he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. “His plan to weaken the NATO alliance by invading the neighboring country has failed,” said former Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev.
In an interview with the BBC, he said that Putin miscalculated everything.
Kozyrev, who served as Russia’s chief financial officer in the 1990s, has repeatedly criticized President Putin. Russia is only seeing a decline, he said, because it is heavily dependent on raw material exports.
Five weeks after launching the aggression against Ukraine, Russian forces are far from the initial targets, to overthrow Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and force the Ukrainians to lay down their arms.
The devastating consequences of the war are evident in many Ukrainian cities, however analysts estimate that Putin misjudged the strength of the Ukrainian resistance, the strength of his army and the reaction of NATO. Their resistance found Russia unprepared, which finds it difficult to devise a new strategy.
