This is the Imperial Gate, the largest of Hagia Sophia which was once used only by the Emperor. On Monday evening, it suffered severe damage, causing reactions in Turkey and Greece.
It was initially the Turkish Association of Art History which in a twitter post informed that the historic Imperial Gate has been damaged, posting the relevant photos and protesting against the security measures of the temple.
Following an official statement, the Greek Foreign Ministry called on the competent authorities to take the necessary measures to bring those responsible to justice, as well as to immediately repair the damage to the monument. He also points out that images of vandalism at the Hagia Sophia Imperial Gate in Istanbul, a world heritage site, cause disgust and sadness.
In addition to the reactions in Greece, Turkish newspapers such as Hurriyet write about the vandalism in question, stating that it “breaks the door with 1400 years of history”, while Yeni Safak talks about a “miserable attack on Agia Sofia”.
Saint Sophia was built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I in Istanbul and is considered one of the most important architectural works of the Byzantine Empire, the religious center of Orthodoxy and one of the most famous monuments in the world. The Imperial Gate, its main gate, is 7 meters high and is made of iron and wood. The door is said to have been made of the oak of Noah’s ark.
