Two powerful explosions rocked Kiev on Thursday evening, at a time when the UN chief was on a visit to the Ukrainian capital, shortly after meeting with Putin in Moscow.
The attack, which could have endangered Guterres’s life, was also confirmed by the Russian Minister of Defense.

The attack is the first in the capital in almost two weeks, and Guterres’s spokesman described it as “shocking”. While the mayor of Kiev Vitali Klitschko as well as Zelensky, who called the attack a mockery of Putin with international institutions, said:

Guterres, who visited the city of Bucharest and other suburbs of Kiev, said he was self-critical about the institution he runs, saying the Security Council failed to do everything in its power to prevent and end this war.
Citing his meeting with Putin, he said the Russian president had agreed “in principle” to the involvement of the United Nations and the Red Cross in the evacuation of civilians at the Mariupol steel plant in Azovstal.
