An American woman has shot dead a man who opened fire with automatic weapons on a crowd of people in Charleston, USA.
Dennis Butler, a 37-year-old with numerous criminal records, was killed after attacking a group of about 40 people attending a birthday party.
Police spokesman Tony Hazelett said the woman’s quick reaction may have prevented a massacre.
The event comes amid the U.S. national gun debate following the Texas school massacre.
Butler had come to the area Wednesday night when someone had asked him to slow down because there were kids playing.
After a small confrontation he had returned with an AR-15 submachine gun and opened fire on the party that was taking place outside an apartment building in the city.
The official said the woman who killed the attacker had no experience with law enforcement and has not been publicly identified.
“She is just a member of the community who by law carried her weapon. “And instead of running away from the threat, she faced the threat and saved many lives.”
The woman had stayed at the scene after the incident and is cooperating with authorities.
Police said no charges would be filed against her.
Police said Butler was found dead at the scene with several gunshot wounds.
The officer did not say how Butler found his machine gun – as he was not allowed to carry it as a former convict.
The killing comes after the teenager’s massacre that killed 21 people at an elementary school in Texas with an AR-15 assault rifle that had been legally purchased.
The attack was the worst of its kind in a decade in the U.S. and has rekindled the debate over personal gun ownership, which is protected by the U.S. constitution.
