Greece came to the aid of Ukraine on the fourth day of the war, sending military aid and medical supplies.
The news was announced by the Greek Prime Minister, Kyqiakos Mitsotakis, who ordered the Ministry of Defense to urgently launch two C-130 aircraft with protective materials for the Ukrainian army in the direction of Poland.
The materials are expected to arrive in Poland during the first hours of Monday morning, and from there will be handed over to the Ukrainian side at a safe border crossing.
It is learned that among the materials that will be sent are Ak47 automatic weapons (Kalashnikovs) and a large amount of ammunition, as well as interconnection equipment, against tanks and grenade launchers.
The military materials are part of the quantities of weapons sent to Isis fighters, seized by the Greek Coast Guard in joint actions with the American side during the Libyan war, and are of Ukrainian production.
In addition to weapons, medical equipment and medicines as well as logistical assistance will be sent to Ukraine. The planes will then evacuate part of the Greek diplomatic staff that was in Kiev as well as Greek citizens who have currently been able to cross the border and are now in Poland.
Earlier, the Greek Prime Minister had a telephone conversation with the Ukrainian president and demanded an immediate halt to the Russian attack on Ukraine. Mitsotakis also strongly condemned the murder during Saturday’s Russian bombings of 10 Ukrainian citizens of Greek origin in Mariupol province.
Afraid that developments in Ukraine and the annexation of its territories by Russia could create a chain of reactions and rekindle decades of conflict in the Balkan region, Athens is one of the countries with the harshest attitude towards Russia, and even Greece has sought to Extremely harsh measures are being taken against Russia by both the European Union and NATO.
