Greece protested to Serbia and Ukraine for not providing timely information about the ammunition load aboard a Ukrainian plane that crashed near the northern city of Kavala on Saturday evening, Greek diplomatic sources said on Monday.
The Antonov An-12 plane carrying 11.5 tons of Serbian-made military defense equipment, including mortars and training shells, crashed and burst into flames, exploding in cornfields. The eight Ukrainian crew members lost their lives.
Earlier, the pilot had reported engine trouble and was given permission to make an emergency landing in Kavala, but the plane’s signal was lost shortly after the call.
The Greek foreign ministry has filed a complaint with Ukraine’s ambassador in Athens saying Greece should have been notified in advance by Ukraine about the nature of the plane’s cargo, a Greek diplomatic source said.
Greek diplomatic sources said earlier on Monday that Greece would also protest to Serbia for the same reason.
Serbia’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Serbian Defense Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on Sunday morning that the military equipment on the plane was produced by Serbia’s defense industry and that the buyer of the cargo was Bangladesh.
Greek authorities cordoned off the area on Saturday and then barred residents from approaching and advised them to keep their doors and windows closed while firefighters and a special disaster response unit investigated the area.
