A giant oil tanker with a capacity of 2 million barrels has exploded in smoke and flames off the coast of Nigeria before sinking in the Ukpokiti oil field near the Niger River delta.
The ship, which also operated as a floating refinery, had a crew of ten, of whom none were reportedly found.
The cause of the explosion on board the ship owned by the Shebah Exploration & Production group is still a mystery, as it is not known how much oil has leaked from it.
Company director Ikemefuna Okafor said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the early morning explosion.
Although Nigeria is Africa’s largest producer of crude oil, its costs are high due to accidents and uncertainty.
Militants have also frequently attacked oil installations and pirate groups are active in the Gulf of Guinea.
