Kosovo’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Donika Gërvalla, reacted on Friday to statements by Serbian officials that some countries have withdrawn recognition of Kosovo’s independence.
At a press conference, Gërvalla was asked about the statement of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Selakovi që, who said on Friday that he had handed over to the Serbian President, Aleksandar Vuiqi., The diplomatic notes of the four countries that withdrew the recognition of Kosovo.
This statement came just a day after Kosovo submitted its application for membership in the Council of Europe, which Serbia opposes.
Gërvalla said that so far they have not received any information about any recognition of the state of Kosovo.
“The fact that only a few hours after Kosovo’s application they say they have provided recognition shows two things: Either the news is untrue or they have been working for a long time for recognition as opposed to what they publicly stated,” Gërvalla said.
Serbia considers that Kosovo by applying for membership in the Council of Europe has violated the Washington agreement reached in September 2020.
The agreement stipulated that for a period of one year, Kosovo would not apply for membership in international organizations, while Serbia would suspend the campaign for the recognition of Kosovo.
Minister Gërvalla said that they have information that Serbia has continued with the recognition campaign and even according to her, they have offered Russian weapons, Russian vaccines and sugar to some African countries to withdraw the recognition of Kosovo.
She declined to reveal the names of those states but said they had not withdrawn recognition.
Meanwhile, Gërvalla said that Serbia has no reason to oppose Kosovo’s membership in the Council of Europe because according to her, this is a positive step for all citizens of Kosovo, including Serbs.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but has not yet joined several major international organizations.
Apart from being a member of the European Union, Kosovo is also not a member of the World Trade Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) and others./Rel
