Germany has adopted a new plan for the gradual easing of restrictions imposed to curb the new coronavirus (COVID-19) over the next four weeks.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz made the announcement after a video conference with the prime ministers of the country’s 16 federal states.
“We can move forward with more confidence,” Scholz told a news conference, noting that the measures had been effective in bringing the pandemic under control.
He said Germany has passed the peak of the Omicron-type coronavirus wave.
“We have agreed on the gradual easing of most coronavirus measures in Germany, in three phases by early spring,” Scholz said.
According to the plan, in the first phase the current limit of gatherings of 10 people will be removed. Those who have been vaccinated or cured of the virus will be allowed to gather without restriction.
In the second phase, starting March 4, the restaurants will serve customers who have been vaccinated, cured or customers who have a negative test.
Bars and clubs will reopen, but only vaccinated or fully cured persons will be admitted, but with a negative test. Persons vaccinated with the third booster dose will not need to have a negative test.
In the third phase by March 20, Scholz said, “all broader safeguards will be lifted if the hospital situation allows.”
