Vehicle production in Germany fell this year to the level of 1974. The decline was caused by the global shortage of semiconductors. But the problem has deeper roots.
The automotive industry in Germany has fallen during 2021 into a deep crisis, which initially did not stand out due to the good financial results of the companies. But in fact car production fell this year to the level of 1974, writes the newspaper “Die Welt”.
According to the data of this newspaper, by the end of 2021, only 2.85 million cars will be produced in Germany. This represents a decrease of 19 percent compared to 2020, which was very weak. According to Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, director of the Private Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Duisburg, “the year that is coming to an end is a black year for the automotive industry in Germany”.
So few cars in 2021 in Germany were last produced in 1974, at a time when the world was embroiled in the first oil crisis. At this time VW Golf was launched as the successor to the Beetle.
The cause of the current downturn is the acute shortage of semiconductors in the automotive industry worldwide. Due to the coron pandemic, natural disasters and mistakes of the corporate purchasing sectors, automakers are not supplying enough semiconductors for a year.
The decline of Germany as a vehicle manufacturer is obvious
Unlike Germany in India there was in 2021 an increase in vehicle production. Germany is now ranked seventh in the international list of the largest car manufacturers. This is a dramatic drop because last year, Germany ranked fourth.
If we look at it over a somewhat longer period of time, Germany’s decline as a vehicle manufacturer becomes even clearer. The decline in atomic vehicle production in Germany began in 2017, and the curve has been steadily declining ever since. Today the number of cars produced is 50 percent lower than at that time./DW
